About Mauritius

Mauritius, blended with a diversity of cultures and religions, is a densely populated island of around 1.2 million people with a population growth rate of 0.90% estimated in 2001. It consists of a society where all the ethnic groups are present: Hindus, Muslims, Christian, Chinese and Europeans live in peace where all the ancestral cultures have been preserved. These features make the island a unique place in the world. Mauritius is an island with surface area of about 720 square miles, situated just above the Tropic of Capricorn, in the south of Indian Ocean, approximately 2000 kilometers to the south eastern coast of Africa with 57° 35 East longitude and 20° 50 South latitude. Being of a volcanic origin, Mauritius has a central plateau which is about 400 meters above sea level. Mountains scattered throughout the island, tropical forests and plants are other features that add to the natural beauty of the island. With more than 90 miles of white sandy beaches and the crystal clear lagoon which are protected from the open sea by the world's third largest coral reef almost surrounding the island.
